Empowered CDC Issues Statement on Break-In at Community Garden

Philadelphia, PA — Empowered CDC is heartbroken to announce that our beloved community garden located in Southwest Philadelphia that is open 24/7 365 days per year for free was broken into over the weekend, resulting in the loss of essential supplies, tools, and resources that directly support our youth programming and neighborhood beautification efforts.
The storage unit, which housed gardening tools, workshop materials, youth program equipment, and school bags with supplies was completely ransacked. This space is more than just a storage site — it is the heartbeat of our garden-based youth initiatives, environmental education, and community-led sustainability work. Everything inside was for the benefit of the public.

“It’s devastating and heartbreaking,” said Isaiah Martin, Executive Director of Empowered CDC. “This wasn’t just a storage space. It was the center of our resource hub for young people learning how to care for the earth and each other. We don’t know why someone would do this, but we are committed to rebuilding — stronger than ever.”
The total loss is estimated at $7,000, and Empowered CDC is now seeking support from the public to help recover what was stolen and restore our operations. The organization has launched a fundraising campaign to replace the stolen items and ensure our youth can continue their critical work without disruption.

“We are calling on our neighbors, partners, and anyone who believes in youth empowerment and green spaces to stand with us during this time,” Martin added. “This is not just about what was taken — it’s about what we are building together.” Empowered will host a series of events to support the recovery efforts including a Breakfast Fundraiser on Saturday, May 17th, 2025.
